Firstly - About Creativity!

Creativity Is Not About The Possession Of Some Special Talent.
It’s About The Willingness To Play
— John Cleese

Firstly, before I explain creative therapy; ask yourself this - Have you ever experienced an art form of any kind that has made you feel something?

We can often feel drawn to a song, picture, story, or another art form that “says it” better than we can.

An expression of self

History shows us that creativity has been woven into both how we communicate and express ourselves since stone-age man started to draw pictures on cave walls.

I therefore see creativity as a very natural and individually unique state of expression that is at the core of every human being.

It is as much a part of our true nature as eating, breathing and drinking!

The True Sign Of Intelligence Is Not Knowledge But Imagination - - - Creativity Is Intelligence Having Fun

Creative Therapy

Put simply, creative therapy is about finding other ways of communicating or expressing ourselves beyond spoken language.

Because sometimes words alone are not enough for what it is that we need to say.

Creative therapies are accessible by everyone and you don’t need to have any artistic skills or experience.

Often The Hands Will Solve A Mystery
That The Intellect Has Struggled With In Vain
— Carl Jung

It refers to different ways of exploring, which can include creative mediums such as: music, drawing, painting, sculpture, dance & performance art, drama, poetry, comedy, literature, photography & video, or any kind of art form you can think of.

It doesn’t really matter what the creative medium is, what matters is that it’s something that you personally connect with and can express yourself through.

It’s not about making a presentation piece; it's more about the connection with the process of creating something itself.I believe that by engaging with creative process in therapy, we can begin to express our feelings and experiences in a way they can be better understood and processed.

It is also about inviting a sense of fun, play and enjoyment into the experience of therapy. Many people as adults often don’t engage in play with the same freedom and carefree abandon as they did when they were children.

Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up
— Pablo Picasso

Creative therapy can be very powerful and although I see it as a potential way of approaching and working with any kind of issue, my experience has shown that is particularly effective for working with;

  • Anxiety & Depression

  • Neurodiversity (ADHD, OCD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc)

  • Trauma

  • Emotional Turmoil

  • Existential & Life Crises

  • Feeling Confused/Stuck/Lost

  • or any kind of feeling that you can’t seem to put into words

I have found from experience that creative therapies can bring about a deeper understanding and acceptance for many clients and, in addition, help to open a path towards healing and closure around situations where many find it virtually impossible to communicate their experience of verbally.
